.

An Air France jet on an overnight flight to Paris from Rio de Janeiro was missing and presumed crashed over the Atlantic Ocean, the airline announced this morning.

“We are probably facing an air catastrophe,” Air France chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon said.

The twin-engine Airbus 330 with 228 people on board was last heard from soon after it encountered severe turbulence after crossing a region of heavy thunderstorms over the Atlantic.
