Japan Earthquake and Tsunamis

The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history struck Friday off the island nation, killing hundreds of people,
.
collapsing buildings, igniting widespread fires and unleashing 30-foot walls of water
.
The 8.9-magnitude quake caused tsunami waves to form that swept across rice fields,
.
engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways,
.
and tossed cars and boats like toys.
.
Some waves reached six miles (10 km) inland on Japan's east coast.
