AIDS Epidemic 'Stabilising'

After 27 years and the loss of more than 25 million lives, the global AIDS pandemic has at last stabilised, but more funds and a breakthrough in disease prevention are needed to sustain this progress and roll back the threat, UNAIDS said on Tuesday.

Deaths from AIDS-related illnesses fell in 2007 for the second year running, thanks mainly to the widening distribution of drugs to control the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that wrecks immune defences, an UNAIDS report said.

Mortality from AIDS last year was around two million -- some 200,000 deaths fewer than in 2005. The tally of people living with HIV last year is put at around 33 million, compared with 32.7 million in 2006, according to the report, issued ahead of the 17th International AIDS Conference, opening in Mexico City on Sunday.

Some 2.7 million people became newly infected last year.

Bush Leaves US with a $482 Billion Deficit

Next president will inherit a record budget deficit of $482 billion Dollars, according to a new Bush administration estimate released Monday.

The administration said the deficit was being driven to an all-time high by the sagging economy and the stimulus payments being made to 130 million households in an effort to keep the country from falling into a deep recession.

The administration also sees inflation of 3.8 percent this year...

Toronto 2nd Most Expensive City in North America

Gas prices and taxes are up and even buying a home has become more expensive - so it comes as no surprise that Toronto is one of the most expensive places to live in North America, according to a new survey.

The ranking is from the annual Mercer's cost of living survey from the UK. This year's results have Toronto vaulting over L.A. and Miami - making it the second most expensive city to live in North America, just behind New York.

Moscow remains the most expensive city to live in in the world. While Tokyo, London, Oslo in Norway and Seoul in South Korea rounded out the top five. (keep reading)
