Barack Obama has said that if he makes it to the White House, his administration would work to advance gay civil rights. (Sep-15-2008).
The Democratic presidential candidate for told the Washington Blade that he and wife Michelle are "blessed with many openly gay and lesbian friends and colleagues," and a gay professor from his college years helped him better understand the lives of gay people.
"A college professor of mine helped me to see the lives of LGBT people from a different perspective. ... And he was just a terrific guy," Obama said. "His comfort in his own skin and the friendship we developed helped to educate me on a number of these [gay] issues.
"Obama reaffirmed his stance backing civil unions rather than marriage for gay couples. "If elected, I would call on Congress to enact legislation that would repeal [the Defence Of Marriage Act] and ensure that the over 1,100 federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally recognised unions."
