Brazil: Gays in the Army

The case of the first gay military couple in the country to come out publicly escalated over the weekend with a special report on primetime TV show Fantástico.
Sargeant Fernando de Alcântara Figueiredo spoke to the show openly about his ten-year relationship with Sargeant Laci de Araújo, who was arrested last Tuesday for desertion, and taken to a military hospital.

The case of the gay military couple continues to develop.
Yesterday the São Paulo State Council of Human Rights declared that Sargeant Laci de Araújo is not a deserter as claimed by the Army. The council has legitimate proof that Laci was under medical care by the actual Army, and that Army doctors had given him medical license in the past. The council is now moving forward with an action against the Army because of Laci de Araújo's arrest last week. According to the council, the sargeant was arrested not because of desertion, but because of his coming out on a magazine and on national TV.
